Operating System (OS) for a Budget PC

The OS is the software that does all the nitty-gritty interfacing with your computer hardware. It presents you with a graphical user interface (GUI) that you can use to access programs or look at pictures. Most consumer computers are running a version of Microsoft Windows as the OS.

Another OS that you could consider is Linux. This is a free OS, but is slightly more complicated to learn and use. The main benefit is that it is free and the software that you’ll need is free as well. It has all the major programs that Windows has. However, because it is not as widely used as Windows, some hardware and software may not be compatible with it.

For a Windows OS we recommend Microsoft Home (B0002423YK). For Linux we recommend starting off with a version of Fedora or Mandrake as they both have large communities where you can find help if needed.
